Frequently asked questions

ACCOUNTS & FEES

What are your school fees and how are they payable?

Each school has its own set fees - differentiated only by the school property valuation in the respective areas. Please access our listing of schools here and click on fees to access the relevant information. Fees are chargeable annually. Parents have the option of paying the fees as follow: 1) Upfront for the year (attracts a discount if paid on or before school starts in January); 2) Termly i.e. before the first day of a new term (attracts also a discount - this same discount is offered to parents who wish to pay for the full year but do so AFTER the first day of school in January); and 3) Monthly over 11 months, via debit order only. This option requires that ALL fees be settled by 31 October each year - Fees are payable 2 months in advance. So, for those children who start at the beginning of the year they will have 11 months to settle all fees, not 12. Any other children who enrol will need to settle all fees by 30 November and this INCLUDES DECEMBER FEES. Note: January and December fees are NOT optional. They are due and payable upon presentation of our invoice. 4) We continue to pay staff salaries (our largest financial commitment), maintain our school, etc whether your child is ill; on vacation; etc. Therefore, your tuition is due and payable in full on the first of each month. Please notify us of any specific circumstances which may affect your timely payment of fees. PS: From time to time our schools run promotional campaigns, these discounted fees are only applicable to new enrolments during the campaign period. This will not result in a change in existing children's fees. All Accounts queries may be directed to accounts@littleashford.co.za.

Do your fees include Holiday Club/Programmes?

Yes. Our listed fees INCLUDE April/Easter and August holiday clubs. However, the December holiday club is NOT included in your fees, they are invoiced separately for each day your child will be in attendance. An attendance fee is also avaible for children who are not enroled at Little Ashford (please note there are age restrictions for participation).

Where can I find your terms & conditions?

This is an important document and is available here. Please read it carefully. NB: We run on a term's notice (4 months) prior to withdrawing your child from school. Unfortunately we do not relax this requirement as it is grossly unfair for other children who are unable to secure a place at the school at short notice to replace your child.

What if I decide not to attend or need to pull my child out of school before the end of the year?

Our Conditions of Admission (terms and conditions) require a term's notice (or 4 months) prior to withdrawing your child for any reason, otherwise you will be held liable for the equivalent number of months'worth of tuitions in the event you do not provide the required notice. All costs involved in collecting any outstanding fees and penalties will be for your own account. Kindly send an email notification to accounts@littleashford.co.za with your school Principal in copy. You will then provided with an online withdrawal form for urgent completion. NO refund of fees or any levies whatsoever will be issued for any reason. In all cases, you owe tuition through your child’s last day of attendance.

Can I drop off my payment at the front desk or put it in my child's bag?

NO. For security and accounting accuracy, we will not accept cash nor chequess at the school. Please make use of our debit order facility, and if approved, transfer via EFT into the school's account. You may also choose to pay several months in advance or pay for the entire school year.

How many children on average per class at Little Ashford?

Our main is to provide provide accessible and a premium education for all. To achieve this, our schools have adopted different fee structures, enabling us to care for your children in similar environments, using different children to staff ratios, underpinned by the same excellent curriculum. Further detail is provided below (and at your school during your visit): i) Lower Children to Staff Ratio: Infants, typically below the age of one, may have a ratio of 4 to 1.
For children aged 1 to 2 years, the ratio is 6 to 1. This category will typically have up to 12 children and 2 adults in this age group, due to the nature of dedicated care for these young children. For children aged between the ages of 2 and 4 (since they are now more independent), the ratio is up to 3 staff members for 25 children. For children older than 4 years of age (including Grade-R), the ratio may increase to 1 teacher and 1 assistant for 25 children. ii) Higher Children to Staff Ratio: Infants, typically below the age of one, may have a ratio of 6 to 1. For children aged 1 to 2 years, the ratio is 10 to 1. This category will typically have up to 12 children and 2 adults in this age group, due to the nature of dedicated care for these young children. For children aged between the ages of 2 and 4 (since they are now more independent), the ratio is up to 3 staff members for 35 children. For children older than 4 years of age (including Grade-R), the ratio may increase to 1 teacher and 1 assistant for 35 children. Children learn languages quickly, and our teachers are proficient in encouraging children to gradually begin to express themselves confidently.

What if I can’t pick up my child? Can someone else do it?

All those listed on your application form can pick up your child. You may also call your school to notify of a person not on your application form who will pick up your child. However, this MUST be confirmed via email to your school Principal PRIOR to the release of your child to the unlisted person. Staff may not release children to anyone who is not authorised by the custodial parent. If the custodial parent is unwilling to give blanket permission to the non-custodial parent, permission must be granted for each specific occasion via email to your school Principal. A custodial parent denying blanket release must provide court documentation regarding custody. This documentation will be reviewed by our legal advisors.

What if I am late for picking my child up?

If a parent or authorised person is late in picking the child up, a late fee will be applied. Contact Accounts for further information. If a child is consistently picked up late, the school will take further action by raising the fee or calling a parent/teacher meeting. Children become upset within parents are not on time so please call your school if you know you will be late. Staff members are never allowed to transport children home. Children not collectd from the school by 18:00 will be dropped off, for safekeeping, at the local police.

Should I stay to get my child settled when dropping them off?

For some children, this is their first separation from their parents. We understand that this is often a difficult experience for youngsters. It is important to let your child know you are leaving, but will come back for them after school. For the first few days you may want to stay 5 to 10 minutes in the car or nearby. We will be glad to check on your child’s progress. Your classroom teacher or/and Principal will let you know when your child feels comfortable with the new environment.

What should I do if my child cries when I leave?

Most children calm down in the first five minutes after their parent leaves. If you say your good-bye to your child and would like a report from us just stay in your car or give us the number/email where we can reach you and we will be glad to report on your child’s behaviour for the first few days. Anxiety also applies to children going through difficulties such as, but not limited to: nightmares, death in the family, divorce, illness, new baby, or simply a change in routine, etc. Please notify us of any changes in your child. All information is kept confidential.

What will happen if my child acts up in class?

If a child is having difficulty controlling their behaviour, we will try to redirect the inappropriate behaviour by providing positive alternatives. The teacher/Principal will talk to the child privately to explain the behaviour problem. Should the problem continue, the parents would be informed. When a child displays unusual behaviour such as prolonged crying, tantrums, kicking, or biting, the parents will be notified immediately. Depending on the severity of the behaviour or where it is a recurring safety issue, the child may be withdrawn from the class or school. This decision would be made after discussion with the parents, the teachers and the Principal. The school makes the final decision. Children will never be yelled at or have physical punishment or rough handling or be restrained or enclosed in a confined space. Teachers may ask your child to step away to calm down or talk with staff until they are no longer disruptive to the class. Staff accepts toileting accidents as normal in this age group and will never single out or punish a child for the accident.

What should I do if my child is sick?

Please do not send a sick child to school. If a child arrives with symptoms of illness, the child will not be permitted to stay. Children will be excluded from contact with the other children until parents can be notified. Please notify us if your child becomes ill and will not be attending that day. We ask that parents notify us when their child contracts a communicable disease. The preschool will notify all other parents about any communicable disease outbreaks (this does not name the child involved just the classroom to indicate highest exposure). A child should not be sent to school when he or she has vomited, had diarrhea or had a fever during the previous 24 hours. Under limited and strict circumstances, and depending on the consent (or lack thereof) provided in your application form, medication may not be administered at school.

What should my child wear?

Children should be dressed in comfortable, practical play clothes and dressed for the weather. The children may get dirty. Please plan ahead for your child to be out in all sorts of weather (not severe of course). Please do pack clean change of clothes, including underwear.

Can I bring in a treat for my child’s birthday?

You may provide a treat for birthdays and be asked to furnish food for themes or holiday celebrations. If you wish to bring a special treat for your child’s birthday, please make prior arrangement with the teachers. They will know the number of children in the class and any food allergies that must be considered. Please always try to keep them healthy!

How can I keep up with what’s going on with my child in class?

You will receive regular electronic communication, in addition to verbal feedback. For activities, you will receive electronic invitations to attend but we also have a live school calendar available on your school's page. At the end of each term, parents will have the opportunity to sit down with teachers to run through the development of the child over the period and review key milestones. Importantly, Parent/Teacher meetings may be arranged upon request.

My child does not speak English. Will you enrol them?

It is not unusual for us to have children start with us who do not speak English. Our caring teachers are adept at making each child feel welcome and included in all activities, and parents will notice a burst of language early on. Children learn languages quickly, and our teachers are proficient in encouraging children to gradually begin to express themselves confidently.

Will my child be prepared for junior primary school after graduating from Little Ashford?

Graduates of our schools move on to a variety of public and private schools. We receive very positive feedback from both parents and teachers that our graduates excel when starting primary school, and are at a significant advantage academically, socially and developmentally. Many of our students go on to pass rigorous entrance assessments into prestigious private schools.
